Catahoulas Take on the Puppybowl

Usually, the  only reason I know it’s Superbowl Sunday is because I’m channel surfing and find the Puppybowl on Animal Planet.  Now on Puppybowl V, I’m pleased that this year all the puppies are homeless animals supplied by multiple animal shelters.

I was also pleased to tune in this year and find not one, but TWO Catahoula puppies (although on the Animal Planet web site, one was listed on two different pages as two different breeds).

I’ve been a proud Catahoula “owner” for a few years, and where I live this breed is unheard of. Only two people have ever guessed his breed correctly to me. The breed is state dog of Louisiana, are herding dogs, and can be quite hard headed. The “Nothing In Life Is Free” training method has worked wonders on Mr. Blue.

Some people insist Mr. Blue is a Pit Bull even after I inform them of his true breed. Like a terrier, he can be territorial.

He’s known to be so in the car, but ironically not at home. He welcomes people into his home and LOVES children and cats – also like the Pit Bull, who has been nicknamed “Nanny Dog” for its fondness of children. Mr. Blue cannot tolerate many dogs who try to mess with him, but I’ve seen cats claw him on the nose to the point of bloodshed, and Mr. Blue just submits to them. When he knows there’s no fight, he’s heart-warmingly gentle.

And the best thing about Mr Blue–which I’m not sure is true to his breed – he’s adaptable. If I tell him it’s play time, he’s ready to mix it up. If I curl up next to him, he’ll cuddle and sleep. He pretty much follows the air in the room, and can add a little playful spice from time to time.

  1. Do you have any Catahoula leopard puppies mixed with pit bulls that have blue eyes. I recently lost me and I am completely heart broken and I would love to find another one. So if you do or if you know anyone who does would you please email me. I promise you, this dog would be loved and cherished.

    Thank you

  2. doris, my catahula/heeler just had puppies with a pitt. the dam is blue with black spots and yellow eyes and she is the smartest more protective dog I have ever owned. 2 of her puppies are blue like her, 1 black, 1 tan.

  3. Catahoula’s were bred to take down hogs, they’re hunting dogs, not herding dogs. There’s a world of difference there. That said, I love the Catahoula/Australian Shepherd mix! 🙂
